WHO IS JEFF IRELAND?
JEFF IRELAND IS THE WORLD’S WORST SPORTS EXECUTIVE
On January 2, 2008 Ireland was officially hired as general manager of the Miami Dolphins.
He has previously served as an executive for the Dallas Cowboys, a scout for the Kansas City Chiefs. He was hired by former Executive Vice President of Football Operations Bill Parcells. Although Ireland officially had final say over player personnel in Miami, it had been speculated that Bill Parcells made such decisions. The Dolphins were able to hire Ireland away from the Cowboys because he did not have final say in Dallas.
In April 2010, Ireland asked NFL prospect Dez Bryant during a formal interview whether Bryant’s mother was a prostitute. According to two unnamed NFL sources, Bryant allegedly told Ireland that his dad was a pimp and that his mother worked for his father. Bryant denies ever telling Ireland that his father was a pimp. Ireland later apologized to Bryant for asking the question.
On September 7, 2010, Ireland assumed full command of operations on a day to day basis. Bill Parcells became a daily consultant for the Miami Dolphins, a position he has since left.
Ireland’s tenure with the Dolphins became controversial as the club’s on-field successes declined after 2008. Public efforts to recruit free agent players such as Tim Tebow, Peyton Manning, and Alex Smith were unsuccessful, as was the effort to recruit former Titans coach Jeff Fisher. Frustration has also grown as the team’s prestige has seemingly sunk. The Dolphins’ unsuccessful courtships of coaches Jim Harbaugh and the release of the marquee offensive player and WR weapon, Brandon Marshall for 2 4th round picks just showed his fans, he was wrong time after time. He might be a talent scout but he is no decision maker. Ireland’s handling of his Bryant interview was cited as an example of poor leadership on Ireland’s part and a perception that Ireland was not honest in dealings with players.
Sunday night, Pittsburgh safety Ryan Clark, who visited the Dolphins as a free agent in 2010 but chose to return to the Steelers, said “no one” wants to play in Miami because there’s “not a good guy making decisions.
Sports Illustrated’s Peter King wrote, “In the history of NFL general managers, Ireland is on the coldest streak ever.” Linebacker Joey Porter, cut by Ireland after the 2009 season, said on NFL Network, “He’s just a guy that is not trustworthy.”
