Urban Meyer’s failed attempt to recruit LeBron James.

Imagine LeBron James in the NFL! Well, Urban Meyer had that vision before LeBron was even in the NBA!

Ohio State Coach Urban Meyer admitted that he indeed tried to recruit LeBron James in 2000 while LeBron was a sophomore in St. Vincent St. Mary’s in Ohio.

Coach Meyer, at the time was a part of the Notre Dame coaching staff as the Wide Receiver coach and recruited the young LeBron who later recorded 102 passes for 2,065 and 23 touchdowns in his sophomore and junior years and received All-State honors. Meyer’s selling point to LeBron was the Mascots that both schools shared, The Fighting Irish.

LeBron said “Thank you very much, I’ll consider it.” When his high school coach caught wind of Meyer’s offer to James, Meyer was laughed at by the head coach for offering Lebron James a scholarship to Notre Dame for football.

“I didn’t know what he was laughing at,” Meyers said, “so we went down and sat in a room and he said, ‘Do you know who that is?’ and I said, ‘No’ and he said, ‘LeBron James’ and I said, ‘Who’s LeBron James?’ and he said, ‘He’ll be the next Michael Jordan’ and I go, ‘Come on.'”

Since then LeBron James has gone to accumulate 2003 Naismith for the most outstanding player in highschool his senior year, 9 NBA All-Stars, 3 NBA League MVPs, a Championship and a finals MVP. With all that being said, Urban Meyer still believes that Lebron would’ve been a Multiple Pro-Bowler in the NFL.

“A first-round draft pick, a hall-of-famer.” Meyer said, “Obviously, he’s a winner.”
